Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. – Mark Twain
British Airways advised us as we landed at Dulles airport that if using a taxi to avoid the touts approaching you in the airport and to make your way straight to the lower level and head for the Washington Flyer ………… signposts are clear. Smooth journey to Hotel Hive close to Foggy Bottom and cost $63.
Choose a central hotel, (we chose Hotel Hive) to make the most of your time. It’s a very walkable city.
Which leads to top tip 3, take comfortable walking shoes, you’ll need them!
Book tickets for the Capitol Visitor’s Centre online before you go. Arrive about half an hour before the timed entry and expect to wait in line for about 45 minutes for security checks. Rid yourself of all food and drink before you enter.
Washington Monument is currently closed until Spring 2019.
Be prepared to wait in line before getting into popular museums such as the Museum of American History.
Enter Arlington Cemetery from the Rosslyn end as there were only a couple of people in front of us for the security check whereas the main entrance there were probably 100 people waiting to get in.
Note the Apollo Exhibition in the Air and Space museum was closed when I visited recently, always check the website if there is something in particular you want to see….saves disappointment.
There maybe several entry points for the larger museums, it might be wiser not to stand inline at main entrance if there is an alternative.
There is talk of the Smithsonian museums being closed at the moment (January 2019) check websites.
Great city isn’t it? So many wonderful museums and buildings to visit that you struggle to get around them all. We loved it there.

Yes we liked it. The Smithsonian museums have just closed due to not having enough money.
