Bandaranaike Airport is Colombo’s international jumping off or on point. It is well served by Sri Lankan airways and Emirates.
Whilst generally the roads in Sri Lanka are poor the Expressway from Colombo to the airport is well made, fast and efficient. Fast if there isn’t much traffic, so twenty miles can take over an hour.
On arrival I was surprised to see many shops lining the arrivals area, not only the usual gifts and souvenirs but white goods such as fridges and ovens! There are several currency exchange areas and a large meeting point for drivers.
On departure it is not immediately clear if you can go through security if flight is not checked in, this was causing some confusion for passengers on the day I left. However there are two security areas one for crew, security and business/first class and a second one for all others.
