Anyone who knows The Grey Traveller knows that I appreciate a little luxury and a 5 star experience so they might be surprised to learn that I have just got back from camping! …………..but camping in style with a little luxe ……… so glamp not camp….glamping and not camping is the name of the game and all this in the lovely Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley,Hampshire.
What is glamping? a bell tent is ready and waiting for you with carpet on the floor and proper beds! The tent which I had the pleasure to stay in had a double bed and two singles, a wood stove and basic cutlery and crockery, bbq and kettle. Each tent had its own decking with a table and seating.
The galloping field has an area in which to wash up, a log store and clean toilets and shower areas………. but what makes this special is the location. Parkland meats coastline close to Southampton which makes exploring the city easy. It is also close to the M27 so New Forest and Portsmouth are within easy reach.
However if you want to enjoy the park it offers plenty of walkigntrails, a beach area, a cafe with outside seating, its own train, children’s play areas, plenty of space to play games and sports and you might even be able to watch a cricket match. The site was once the home of the biggest milirtay hospital and visitors can see the chapel which is all that is left of the hospital (It is closed at the moment for renovation).
With the parkland leading down to the beach there are great views of Southampton water and you might be lucky enough to catch a liner leaving the port.
