I didn’t know what to expect when I researched Budapest and came across ‘you must visit a ruin bar’ so of course added Szimpla Kert to my packed itinerary. I was not disappointed. Just off the Dohany Utca we easily found this bar with its hole in the wall entrance and wacky decoration.
Well a ruin bar is exactly as it seems, a bar that has sprung up in a ruined building. In fact there appeared to be several small bars with an eclectic style of decor from old toys, obsolete signs, florescent back lit glass shelves, dark corners, odd chairs and stools and definitely none of your chintzy cosy style here. I especially liked the open air centre which had been made into a courtyard with wobbly tables and an old car which had many badges and stickers and a bench seat to use. It was taken but I would have loved to have been seated right there with my crisp Hungarian white. Great vibe even in the middle of the afternoon.
