A chat with Fanny Blake

IMG_7885Thank you to Fanny Blake for agreeing to feature on the  ‘author chat’s’ strand of the Grey Book Worm.

I have recently read and thoroughly enjoyed Our Summer Together about a woman of a certain age finding love second time around whilst going through a divorce, a house move and her children’s ‘non acceptance’ of her new partner. I was keen to find out more about Fanny so here goes…….

What was your favourite childhood book and why? Surprise surprise yet another author who loved Enid Blyton!

“I liked anything by Enid Blyton when I was really young, starting with Noddy and moving on to all her other books. But my favourite was The Magic Faraway Tree. I absolutely loved being taken to the top of that tree and finding out which world had come round.”  Couldn’t agree more Fanny I used to wish I could find a tree like that, her imagination and stories were amazing and I couldn’t wait to read them again to my children.

Which authors inspire you and why?

“The one author who inspires me is Anne Tyler  I love the way she writes about domestic matters in a way that makes them universal. She is so beady-eyed about her characters and full of compassion for them. If I could write like anyone it would be like her.”

Where do you usually write and do you have a ‘usual timetable’?

“I usually write in my ‘office’ – although that makes it sound much grander than it is. It’s a small room off the kitchen, so unfortunately close to the biscuit tin, but it has a window that overlooks our rather unkempt garden. I try to start writing at about 9am and my aim is to complete 1,000 words a day. Though I admit this often goes wrong when I have bits of journalism or book reviewing that I need to do by a deadline. I work through until about 6, stopping for a bite of lunch.”

What are you working on at the moment?

“I’ve just started a new novel that’s set in southern Italy about two English women who meet on a cultural tour. I don’t want to say too much in case I jinx it!”  Looking forward to seeing it on the bookshelves Fanny!

Social media is the modern way to advertise and let people know about your ideas, products and thoughts so I asked Fanny  – Do you use social media to promote and interact with readers?

“Yes I do. The great thing about social media is that it does connect writers to readers who they would never otherwise meet. It’s wonderful to have the chance to interact in that way.”

….And lastly – Any tips for aspiring writers?

“Don’t give up. There are plenty of moments when you may feel like abandoning your work for all sorts of reasons, but the important thing is to keep going. Once you have a draft, you can begin working to improve it.”

Thank you Fanny.

Our Summer Together recently published in paperback by Orion.
