If you are visiting Winchester it’s worth a side trip to Bishop’s Waltham if you haven’t ticked off a Bishop’s Palace ruin when visiting England. Just a few miles south of the city on the B1277 this small town straddles the main road, the palace on one side of it and a few shops on the other.
English Heritage look after the Palace ruins which are free to enter, the grounds are ideal to picnic in and there is a small museum about the local area run by a team of volunteers.
Despite being a small town there are many quality bistros and other eateries in the centre and easily reached by crossing the main road opposite the palace site.
