The A – Z of why to visit Stratford upon Avon ~ or 26 reasons why to!


A is for the Avon, the river – home to the swans and the barges. Where rowers practise their skills and where ducks and moor hens show who is boss.

B is for the Bard, references to him are everywhere……… and is also for Box Brownie where the service is first class and the coffee divine.

C is for the cafes with out side seating in Henley Street…..and for the canal boats…..and for the Carlton Guest House where The Grey Traveller and he who likes to think he is obeyed were well looked after. So close to town and parking too!IMG_3544.jpg

D is for the Dirty Duck, a popular pub along the river, with references and photos of the great actors/actresses who have starred in the town…… and d is  for decorated bikes.IMG_1902.jpg

E is Edward Moon a delightful brasserie where I experienced a blackcurrant creme brûlée and those that know The Grey Traveller know that creme brûlées are a popular blogging point.

F is for the fantastic location that is Stratford, you can easily reach Cadburyworld, Oxford and Warwick Castle.

G is for the geese that like to be fed.

H is for Henley Street where Shakespeare’s birthplace is open to tour….. and for the Holy Trinity church.

I  is for It’s on the grand tour of many American and Asian visitors along with Bath and York.

J is for Jane Gregg whose memory stone is near the theatre, along with Buzz Goodbody and Norman Rodway.

K is for King Lear and Othello and all the plays that are referenced in the town.

L is for the locks which are hard to turn as the boats come into Stratford.

M is for mosaic I found on the outside of a school near Evesham Place……..and the sculpted musicians on a lamp post near the theatre.

N is for Norman…… I mentioned him earlier!

O is for the old lamps decorating the town.

P is for pubs and particularly the Red Lion with an out side area right by the river.

Q is for the queue signs for cruising the river…..but go in the morning and you won’t wait for long.

R is for river boat trips for 40 minutes and the reflections on the river on sunny days……. and also for the Royal Shakespeare Company both the building and productions need to be seen.

S is for Shakespeare of course! and shopping in the specialist stores in town.

T is for tow paths which you can walk on for miles from Stratford.IMG_3567.JPG

U is for up there as one of the nicest English towns to visit!

V is for Vivien Leigh whose memory stone is near the theatre.

W is for the walks you can enjoy by the river and on tow paths watching the canal boats.

X is for XYZ which is for you to add!

  1. Thanks from @ListersGroup for the follow on Twitter, The Grey Traveller AKA @GreyTravels. We’ve enjoyed seeing your snaps of Stratford and some of your travels further afield. Though founded in Coventry, Stratford seems very much to be our home-town now – after all, we’re based in two buildings on the edge of town called Othello House and King Lear House!
