The Tannery in old Marrakech

With mint held to my nose I followed a guide round a tannery on the edge of the old city on one hot mother of an afternoon and  I  smelt it before I saw it. Being late in the day only a few workers were here

.Lime pits open, hides drying, cats  sleeping and children playing hit all the health and safety worry buttons. I walked pretty quickly because of the smell and the guide talked a little  about the process of drying and dying the hides to later become handbags and belts.

Hard work in this heat and smell, very labour intensive and very dangerous.

Our personal guide was organised by Riad Kniza
